August 1998’s block was a Churn Dash.

The finished block measures 7 1/2 inches square (8  inches unfinished).

  1. Cut two tan 3 3/8 inch squares.
  2. Cut these in half diagonally.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with your colored fabric.

An alternative way to create the corner blocks would be to place the tan 3 3/8 inch squares over the colored 3 3/8 inch squares and draw a diagonal line. Sew 1/4 of an inch on each side of the line, then cut them apart along the line you drew and press them open.
  1. Cut a 3 inch square from the tan fabric.
  1. Cut four 1 3/4 by 3 inch rectangles from the tan fabric.
  2. Cut four 1 3/4 by 3 inch rectangles from the colored fabric.
  1. Assemble the squares from your triangles and rectangles.
  2. Assemble the block as pictured.
  3. Your finished (unfinished) block should measure eight inches.  Be sure to leave the seam allowance on the block, DO NOT cut it to the 7 1/2 inch finished size -- as the “finished” measurement represents the block size after it is sewn into a quilt top.
