The block for September 2004 is the "Crown of Thorns" block  Each finished block measures 15 inches square.  (15 ½ X 15 ½ inches unfinished).   Instructions:  Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.

Choose a dark red tone-on-tone for the center, a small print red floral with white background for the crown, and a white tone-on-tone for the background.   Cutting instructions: 1.   From the dark red material, cut four 3 1/2 inch squares. From the white background material, cut five 3 1/2 inch squares. 2.   From the dark red material, cut two 3 7/8 inch squares. From the white background material, cut six 3 7/8 inch squares. Cut each square diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner to make 16 triangles. 3.   From the red floral fabric, cut eight 3 7/8 inch squares.   Cut each square diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner to make 16 triangles. Piecing instructions: 4.   Match four of the floral triangles to the four dark red triangles right sides together and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the long sides. Press open to the red side.  You will end up with four red/floral squares like that in graphic 4.   5.  Do the same with the other twelve floral triangles and the twelve white triangles to form twelve floral/white squares.  (again see graphic 5) Assembly instructions: 6.   Sew the squares into five rows and then assemble these five rows into a finished block.  Refer to graphics 6 & 7 for placement.  Remember to pin the rows together well at the seams to ensure your corners match up as closely as possible. Your completed unfinished block will measure 15 ½ inches. 15 inches after sewn into a quilt!
