Choose a variety of flannel scraps. I suggest at least
5 and as many as 12 different patterns.
From the scraps, cut the following pieces making sure
to vary the fabrics used to create a "scrappy look":
1. Cut five 4 1/2 inch squares. 2. Cut five 2 1/2 X
4 1/2 inch rectangles. 3. Cut two 2 1/2 X 6
1/2 inch strips.
Sewing Directions
4. With right sides together, sew each of the squares to a
different patterned 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangle using a 1/4" seam allowance.
You will end up with five sets that look like that in graphic 4.
Press seams toward the darker sides. 5. Sew one of the sets to one 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch
strip. Make sure that when you are finished, the square is on top and
the strip is to the left of the set as shown in graphic 5. Repeat with
another set and the second strip make sure that when you are finished, the
square is on the bottom and the strip is to the left of the set as shown
in graphic 6. Press the seams toward the strips. 6. Repeat with another square/rectamgle set and the second
strip make sure that when you are finished, the square is on the bottom and
the strip is to the left of the set as shown in graphic 6. Press the
seams toward the strips. 7. Join the three remaining square/rectangle sets together.
Refer to graphic 7 for placement.
8. To assemble the finished block, sew two sections
from steps 5 & 6 together into a row, and then sew that row to the row
created in step 7. Refer to graphic 8 closely for placement.
