Star of Hope

January 2003’s block is a "Star of Hope"

Instructions:  Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.  

 The block measures 12 inches square.  (12 ½ X 12 ½ inches unfinished).

Choose a tone-on-tone bright yellow-gold fabric for the star, a small print blue fabric for the interior of the star, and a dark blue print or tone-on-tone fabric for the background



Cutting instructions:

    1.  From the dark blue background fabric, cut four  4 1/2 inch squares and one 5 1/4 inch square.  Cut the larger square twice diagonally for form four quarter-square triangles.

    2.  From the yellow-gold fabric, cut one  4 1/2 inch squares and two 5 1/4 inch square.  Cut the larger squares twice diagonally for form eight quarter-square triangles.

3.  From the light blue print fabric, cut one 5 1/4 inch square.  Cut the square twice diagonally for form four quarter-square triangles.


Assembly instructions:


4.  Using a 1/4-inch seam allowance, sew four yellow quarter-square triangles to the four dark blue triangles matching short sides.  Sew the other four yellow quarter-square triangles to the four light blue triangles.  Press seams to the blue sides.

5.  Sew the yellow/dark blue units to the yellow/light blue units with the yellow triangles opposite each other to form four squares.  


6.  Refering to graphic 4 for the layout, sew squares into rows.


           a.  Sew one yellow/blue unit between two dark blue squares making sure the yellow trangles are next to the dark blue squares.  Repeat with another yellow/blue unit and the remaining dark blue squares.  Press toward the blue squares.

                  b.  Sew the yellow square between 2 yellow/blue units making sure the light blue triangles are next to the yellow square.  Press toward the yellow square

          

    7.  Sew the rows together to form the finished block.  Remember to pin intersections well to make clean corners.

Your completed unfinished block will measure 12 ½ inches.  Be sure to leave the seam allowance on the block.  DO NOT cut it to the 12-inch finished size -- as the "finished" measurement represents the block size after it is sewn into a aquilt top.
